Spring is a great time to check your plumbing and make sure that everything is in order and working properly. Here are four different ways you can check your plumbing to ensure that everything is working properly.
#1 Turn On Your Outside Water
If you turned off the water to your outside faucets, now is a good time of year to turn the outside water back on. By mid-April, you should be able to turn on the outside water faucet without everything freezing up again. Once you open up the water for your faucets, turn on all outside faucets and make sure that that water is flowing out of them properly and that there are not any leaks.
If your outside water faucet is leaking, it may be because the pipes or components for the faucet expanded when water froze
#2 Check For Plumbing Lines Leaks
Second, go down into your basement or crawlspace and check your plumbing for leaks. Even a small leak can waste a lot of water every day and can cost you a lot of money. Inspecting your pipes is the best way to identify leaks. Often, these leaks can be remedied by putting a little plumbing tape or plumbing putty over where the leak is. However, if the leak is large, you may need a plumber to come in and replace the affected pipes.
#3 Insulate Your Pipes
Although your pipes don't need to be insulated to work effectively in the summer, spring is a great time to insulate your pipes. Insulated pipes will help your water retain the correct temperature all the way from your water heater to the inside of your house. Insulating your pipes will also help ensure that they don't freeze when winter rolls around again as well.
You can easily insulate your pipes yourself by picking up pipe insulation from your local hardware store and securing it with electrical tape. The biggest issue will be access to the pipes.
This spring is a good time to make sure that your outside faucets are working correctly. Make sure to check for leaks throughout your system as well and insulate your pipes against the cold. To find out more, speak with a business like C B Lucas Heating & Air Conditioning.
